Travel Notes on Beauty, Nostalgia and the Art of Dying Properly
There is a county that doesn’t exist. And yet we return to it – again and again.
Midsomer is more than just the setting of a long-running crime series. It’s a landscape of longing, a world made of hedgerows, tea and silences too neat to be innocent.
Midsomer Murders isn’t just a passion project of mine (you can find more on MidsomerMurdersHistory.org). It’s also an ongoing case study: a look at nostalgia handled with precision, the balance between fiction and place, and the ways popular drama intersects with tourism and collective memory.
Here, I publish my thoughts about the series and its atmosphere:

On Midsomer Murders & History:
You’ll find a complete overview of the site on the Sitemap at MidsomerMurderHistory.org.
It’s where I’ve gathered all my research: overviews of history in Midsomer County, the historians, institutions, and even Henry Hogson & Co. You can also read about the history of the Midsomer film locations, dive into chapters on English history (with some in German, too), and browse my blog posts about all things historical in Midsomer Murders.
What’s new?
I’m currently writing a book about Midsomer Murders, looking at the series from my professional perspective. As part of the research, I’m rewatching every single episode… slowly, and with a very specific eye. I’m collecting certain themes, images, and oddities as I go. It’s a long-term project (likely be at it well into the second half of 2026) but you can follow my progress here.
Work in Public. I’m keeping track of all these things:
- All Village Fêtes and Local Festivities
- All Pubs
- Re-Enactments
- A List of Public History in Midsomer
- Local Historians & Co. in Midsomer Murders
- Music
